Replaced Components
The 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis is built with the following REAR suspension components: 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Air Springs (x2) - commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Shock Absorbers (x4) - has metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Coil Springs (x2) - the front of the town car already has coil springs, thats why we not only offer replacements for weakened coil springs in the front, but our conversion kit puts the same, sturdy design on the rear of the vehicle. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Height Sensors (x2) - a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Air Lines- tubes that run from a compressor to the air which carry pressurized air to the air bags in order to adjust the height of the vehicle, respectively. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Solenoids (x2) - usually L-shaped, these plastic components connect the electrical connection and lines of suspension components to the suspension control module on vehicles with active suspension. The solenoid regulates the air pressure for each air spring. Solenoids start to leak as they wear out causing the vehicle to sag or to lean. This will cause the ride height sensor to send a signal to activate the compressor in an attempt to inflate the air suspension and level out the vehicle. This excessive work load will eventually lead to total failure of the compressor. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Compressor Assembly- creates/sends pressurized to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Dryer- prevents moisture build-up inside of air suspension parts. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height. 2001-2002 Mercury Grand Marquis O-rings- Although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs
If the FRONT of the vehicle is sitting too low or sagging, there is a good chance the original equipment coil springs in the front are worn out or even broken.  These high quality replacement coil springs from Strutmasters are proudly made in the USA.  They will help level the front of the vehicle.  We recommend replacing the front shocks at the same time for the best possible ride quality.  The REAR of your vehicle was equipped with an air suspension system from the factory.  The easiest way to spot a failure in this area of the car is a drop in ride height or about three to five inches.  When this type of vehicle is experiencing total suspension failure, it will appear the entire rear of the car is squatting.  If a suspension warning light or message is illuminated on the instrument panel, that is another bad sign. Listen closely to the air compressor. If it has stopped working or is running too often (longer than 15-20 seconds maximum), there are leaks in the system.  The most common cause of failure is tiny cracks in the rubber portion of the rear air springs.  They develop naturally with dry rot and millions of cycles of up and down motion that wear around the edges.  As the cracks grow bigger, more air leaks from the system and the compressor is eventually killed.  A Strutmasters conversion kit for the rear of the vehicle is a permanent solution that saves hundreds, even thousands of dollars versus replacing several original equipment components that rely heavily on electronics to function.

OEM Replacement Cost
'+ Rear Air Springs ($630 each) + Compressor Assembly ($790) + Dryer ($230) + Front Coil Springs ($160 each) = Over $2,600with dealer installation (and that doesnt even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

Aftermarket Replacement Cost
'+ REAR OE equivalent Air Springs ($90 each) + Compressor Assembly w/ Dryer ($210) + Front Coil Springs ($65pair) = Over $450 (but that doesn't include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
About 98% of Strutmasters customers choose to convert the factory air suspension system on the REAR of these vehicles with one of our conversion kits. They have told us higher mileage vehicles can sometimes sag or sit too low in the front. We have solved the problem with this new product line. Strutmasters Premium Front Coil Springs are the perfect compliment to our REAR Air Suspension Conversion Kit. If the FRONT of the vehicle is sagging or not level, the original equipment coil springs may be worn out or even broken. These high quality, American-Made front coil springs will help bring the height back to spec and improve the ride quality. For the best result, we recommend replacing the front shock absorbers (NOT included in this product). Since 1999, we have been the industry leader in air suspension conversion kits. Don't settle for less, choose the best -- Strutmasters!
